Richard G. Hammond 90, of Bedford, died April 11, 2022 at his residence. He was born on July 12, 1931 in Bedford a son of the late John Grover and Lillian Irene (Smith) Hammond. On November 19, 1949 in Winchester, VA he married Pearl (May) Hammond who survives along with the following children: John Hammond and wife Peggy, of Bedford, Alan Hammond and wife Susan, of Bedford, Debra Stewart and husband Robert, of Leola, and Cheryl Drozynski and husband Joseph, of Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren: Beth Ann Schnieder, Kelcy Shaffer, Kaleb Hammond, Jason Stewart, Sarah Montague, Matthew Drozynski, and Sean Drozynski; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister Joanne Hammond, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandyn Hammond.
Richard was a 1949 graduate of Bedford High School, and was the class Vice-President. He and John May farmed for 10 years until the bypass took their farm land, and they then started Hammond & May Lath and Plaster Company. Richard also worked and retired as the Highway Maintenance Manager for Bedford and Fulton Counties for over 20 years. He was great with numbers, and along with his sister, Joanne, they formed Hammond Tax Service in the late 1970’s simply because he liked preparing income tax returns. He was a member and past president of the Bedford Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707. Richard was also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the church council, and volunteered countless hours doing remodeling projects and general maintenance around the church buildings. He enjoyed watching Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football, working outdoors, and having a beer in the plaster shed with his good friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Bedford, with Rev. David Weinhold officiating. Burial at Bedford Cemetery. Friends will be received on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
