Joseph Benjamin Thomas, 85, of Cumberland Road Bedford, died Saturday, April 19, 2003 at his home. He was born on January 7, 1918 in Berlin, a son of the late John A. and Annie Rebecca (Menges) Thomas Sr. On June 22, 1938 in Winchester, VA. He married Velma Mae “Temmy” Walker who survives along with the following family, a son, Robert A. married to the former RoseMarie (Tayco Songcog) Thomas of Greenville, 2 Grandaughters, who were raised by there grandparents Colleen Basore of Bedford, and Shela wife of Steve Weiss of Ft. Branch, Indiana, 3 great-grandchildern one who was raised by her great grandparents, Christie wife of Johnny Horn of Manns Choice, Kaleb Brown of NY, and Dain Hawkins of Bedford. 2 great great grandchildren, Brenna Becker and Emily Horn both of Manns Choice. 3 Sisters , Lucille Ritchey, Katherine Trent and Kathleen Miller all of Somerset County. He was preceded in death 2 sisters Martha Petran, and Mary Miller, 3 brothers Abraham , John Jr., and Floyd Thomas.
Mr Thomas was a member of the Church of the Brethren, in Berlin and the Teamsters Union. He retired as a truck driver for Eastern Express, and prior to that drove coal truck for Thomas Brothers, He was also owner of Thomas Antiques for 25 years. He enjoyed cars, and boating after learning to water ski at age 50. He also enjoyed dancing and big band music.
Funeral Services: Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at 11:00 AM from the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford with the Pastor Ralph G. Landis officiating. Burial in Schellsburg Cemetery. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, at the funeral home.
