Joan Eleanor Sheirer of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the age of 92, surrounded by family. Joan was born on Sept. 27, 1929, at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Garret and Nellie Sears. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Stanford Paul Sheirer, siblings: including her half-brother: Raymond Fratini, half-sister: Helen Miller, brother: John Sears, sister: Ina Young, and grandson: Dillon Wenzel. She is survived by her five children: Ronald, fiancé of Kathy Stahl. Daniel, husband of Karen [Hurley]. Susan, companion of William Blackburn. Ellen, companion of Daniel Clapper Jr. Barbara, wife of David Rebuck. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Ronald and Kristin Sheirer. Caleb and Ethan Sheirer. Laura, wife of Justin Brumbaugh. Garret Hoover, companion of Rachelle Thomas. Derek Rebuck, husband of Samantha [Rimbey]. Tara Rebuck, companion of Anthony Hernandez. Sabrina Rebuck, wife of Kristopher Douglass, and Kayla Rebuck, fiancé of Kenna Kosinski. She also has eight great-grandchildren: Gabriel and Liv Sheirer. Rilee, Luke, and Lilly Beaken. Alyssa, Camryn, and Gianna Brumbaugh. She is also survived by her sister-in-law: Sue Sheirer, wife of the late William Sheirer. Brother-in-law, James R. Moore, husband of the late Geraldine (Sheirer), and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
While living in San Francisco, she met Stanford, stationed as a radar man for the U.S.S. Manchester. She was a keypunch operator for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Eventually, Stan whisked her off her feet, taking her to the East coast. She and Stan married on October 4, 1955, in Winchester, Virginia, and moved to Bedford, making it their home. In 2000, she retired from CVS Pharmacy in Bedford. She loved her Irish heritage, often singing with an Irish brogue. She treasured her family and friends including her California friend of seventy-four years: Leda Taylor, and her Bedford friends: Mary Beaken and Ruth Fleegle.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Father Richard Tomkosky Celebrant.
