James D. Irwin

James (Jim) D. Irwin 83, of Bedford, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, May 12, 2021. He was born February 18, 1938 in Bedford, and proudly served his country from 1956 to 1962 aboard the heavy cruiser USS Newport News along with his late brother Roger Irwin. During his time in the Navy Jim made lifelong friends that he remained in contact throughout his life.  Jim was the son of the late David Carlin and Evelyn Clarissa (Hershberger) Irwin. He married Shirley M. (Bowser) Irwin on July 29, 1962 who preceded him in death on May 25, 2020. He is survived by two sons: Daniel Irwin and wife Diane, of Pointblank, TX and Edward Irwin, of Bedford, PA; three grandchildren: Taylor Stellan and husband Robert of La Porte, TX, Tyler Irwin of Augusta, GA and Mason Irwin of Bedford; three great-grandchildren: Colten, Sadie, and Isaiah Stellan; and a sister, Marian (Midge) Faust, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by a brother Roger Irwin, and a sister Judy Hoagland.

Jim retired from Standard Register where he served many decades as a Plant Supervisor. Jim loved spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren and passionately served his Lord and Savior. He was a very active member of St. John’s Christian Church, where he served as President of the Church Council, and oversaw the Anderson Cemetery.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor Eric Larson officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, a combined memorial service for Jim and his beloved Shirley will be held at the St. John’s Christian Church, in Cessna.
