Obituary

G. Donald Arnold 96, of Baltimore, MD died Thursday, March 23, 2023.  He was born on May 6, 1926 in Bedford, a son of the late George and Stella (Ernest) Arnold.  He is survived by companion Irene Newton, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by the following siblings: Hazel M. Gates, fraternal twin brother William Dale Arnold, Charles Denton Arnold, Paul Victor Arnold, and baby Ernie Arnold.

Donald was a 1944 graduate of Bedford High School and served in the Air Force during WWII in the South Pacific. He served with the 874th squadron, 498 bombardment group, 73rd bomb wing. Donald’s love of music started at Bedford High School playing trumpet in the band with his twin brother Dale. This led him to continue his education at the Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory for Music. Upon graduation he made Baltimore his permanent residence and taught music at Kenwood High School for over 30 years. He was an accomplished musician playing many instruments, but was well known for his expertise on the trumpet. His compassion for and love of music inspired many young students to continue their education in the field of music. In the 1950’s he joined the Ches Kellam Band playing in the city’s music hot spots. He took over leadership of the band in 2008. The band was renamed The Don Arnold Big Band. The many CDs made and concerts performed wouldn’t have been possible without the help and involvement of his loving companion, Irene. His last and final role with the band was this past November with a concert at the Rosedale Fire Hall. In attendance were family members, friends, and past students of his. His love of music, gentle soul and wiry sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
