F. Pauline Smith Obituary

F. Pauline Smith, (Polly), 95, of Bedford, passed from this life into eternal heavenly life on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at home.  She was born on May 14, 1926, in Everett, the daughter of the late Adam and Grace (Jay) Snyder. On May 18, 1947, she married Jay D. Smith Jr. who preceded her in death in 2015 after 68 years of marriage. Polly is survived by three sons and one daughter: Jay Smith of New York City; Adam Smith and wife Christine of Bedford; Dr. Brian Smith and wife Dr. Mary Jo Hughes of Delmar, NY; and Sherry O'Shurak and husband William of Bedford; three grandchildren: Zach O’Shurak and wife Shannon of Allison Park; Dr. Lucas Smith and wife Meghan of Seattle; and Rebecca Hughes Smith of Delmar; three great grandchildren: Seamus Smith and Zoey and Jaxon O’Shurak.  Polly was preceded in death by two brothers: Wilbert and her twin brother Paul Snyder; and three sisters, Marietta Sands, Kathleen Harclerode, and Betty Jane Baker.  Polly is survived by one brother, Marvin Snyder and partner Nancy of Everett.

Polly retired as a bank teller from Johnstown Bank and Trust, North Richard Steet office, in 1988.  Her previous employment included the Bedford Springs Hotel where she worked as a switchboard operator and the Fort Bedford Inn as a front desk reservationist. Polly enjoyed many friendships throughout the years through work and church. She was a positive person who enjoyed being with people.  Polly was active in church throughout her life.  She served as a Sunday school teacher, a chaperone for youth group trips to the Jesus Rallies in the 1970s, and a participant in the March for Life in Washington, DC.  Polly served as a point person for her church for Love in the Name of Christ collecting needed items during the early years of the ministry.  Polly accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and lived her life as a woman of faith, praying for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as for others.  She said a prayer of thanks before all meals and at all family holiday gatherings. Polly never dwelled on the past, but pressed forward in her life, grateful for every day of life God gave her.  In her later years she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease which she handled with grace. Polly was loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed. Special thanks to Dr. Henry Shoenthal for his years of medical care and to all the caregivers, especially Dee and Jessica, who helped to take care of Polly and enriched her life with their kindness.
