Dorothy Jean (Martin) Smith

Dorothy Jean Martin Smith, 83 of Clayton, NC, formerly of Bedford, passed away on January 6, 2023, after a short illness.  She was born on February 27, 1939 in Bedford, a daughter of the late James E. and Patricia M. (Wertz) Martin. Dorothy is survived by her husband George, who she met in 1958 on a blind date in Washington, DC. They were married in August of 1962. She is also survived by three sons Mark Smith and wife Michele of Clayton, NC; Greg Smith and wife Anne Marie of Clayton, NC; Troy Smith and wife Judy of Blaine, TN; and one daughter Melissa Smith of Clayton, NC; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister Cora Sue Sheirer of Buffalo Mills, PA; a brother James Martin and wife Janet of Osterbug, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

After Dot graduated from Bedford High in 1957, she worked as a secretary to the superintendent for the Bedford Area School District.  She retired from St Mary’s County, MD Sheriff Office.  She loved to sew, read books, camp, and travel with family.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery.   Our online guestbook is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
