Charles E. Berkheimer

Charles  E. “Beany” Berkheimer, 86, of East John Street, Bedford, formerly of Hollidaysburg, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on March 12, 1923, in Hollidaysburg, a son, of the late Amos and Rosie (Myers) Berkheimer.  In Hollidaysburg he married his first wife, Kathryn Stanley in 1941 and she preceded him in death on December 3, 1989.  He married his second wife Nora Robinson in 1994 and she preceded him in death in July of 1997.  He is survived by five sons: Charles Berkheimer and wife Edie of Hollidaysburg, Michael Berkheimer and wife Linda of Duncansville, Jeffrey Berkheimer and wife Ginny of Blue Knob, Mark Berkheimer and wife Karen of Chambersburg, Gary Berkheimer and wife Terri of Woodbridge, VA, 2 step-children, 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, a sister, Helen "Betts" Weakland of Duncansville, and companion Nancy Peifer of Bedford.  .He was preceded in death by one son:  Robert Berkheimer and widow Sylvia who survives of New Enterprise, two brothers Roy and Kenneth Berkheimer, and one grandson Vincent Berkheimer.

He was a World War II Veteran in the 8th Army Air Force serving in the European Theatre Operations in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Africa, and Libya.  He retired from Berwind Railway after 46 years of service.  He enjoyed his years as a Jaffa Shrine Clown and loved being outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting.

Funeral Services:  Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford with Adam Kravets officiating.  Burial at Bedford Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.  Friends will be received on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
