Betty Lorene Shaffer, 94 of Bedford, died on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at her residence. She was born on March 20, 1927 in Bedford, a daughter of the late D. Edward and Margaret May (Diehl) Wakefield. On December 24, 1944 in Friends Cove, she married Eugene H. Shaffer who preceded her in death on February 17, 2001. She is survived by three sons: Terry E. Shaffer and wife Fran of Las Vegas, NV; Gary D. Shaffer and wife Rebecca of Bedford; Joe A. Shaffer and wife Judith of Lititz; two daughters: Jenny L. Barnes and husband Barry of Bedford; Lisa A. Cessna and husband Jay also of Bedford; 12 grandchildren: Darrin Shaffer, Melissa Shaffer, Jill Bauer, Aaron Shaffer, Christopher Shaffer, Jeremy Weber, Corey Shaffer, Lycia Weber, Nathan Weber, Olivia Ickes, Austin Barnes, and AshleyAnn Caballeros; 22 great-grandchildren: Jayde Lucero, Drew Rife, Layne Shaffer, Elliott Bauer, Madelyn Shaffer, Emma Shaffer, Lucas Shaffer, Ethan Weber, Rachel Weber, Cooper Weber, Silas Weber, Paige Shaffer, Scott Shaffer, Dathan Hylton, Lylee Cook, Lael Cook, Reagan Weber, Jensen Weber, Allie Rivera, Jessica Smith, Emily Sharpe, and EmilyAnn Barnes; three great-great-grandchildren: Axel, Aiden, and Allie Lucero; a good friend, Galina Yusova. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joseph Wakefield and two sisters, Margaret Fetters and Louise Dibert.
Betty’s life revolved around her family and her church. She was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of the Yeager Memorial Lutheran Church. She was very active in the church singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school. She was a member at one time of the LCW group and along with her husband they were in charge of the Luther League. Her past times included reading, playing cards, sewing, making quilts, cooking and hosting family meals.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the Yeager Memorial Lutheran Church in Rainsburg, with Rev. Jenny Barnes officiating. Burial at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford and on Monday 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
