William E. Palin M.D.

William E. Palin, M.D., 90, of Cumberland Road, Bedford, died Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, MD.  He was born on February 9, 1921, in Connellsville, a son of the late John S. and Anna (Shaw) Palin.  On August 8, 1945 in Langeloth, he married Frances M. Purdy and she survives along with the following family, one son, William E. Palin Jr., M.D. and wife Linda of Fernandino Beach, FL, three daughters, Jane P. Streb and husband William of Grand Rapids, MI, Lynn O’Neal and husband Michael of Northport, AL, and, Lois P. O'Donnell, D.V.M. and husband James, of New Hope, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, an infant, Ethel Malone and Lois Wilkinson and one brother,  John R. Palin.

He was a Captain in the Army serving in WWII. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Medical School.  He served his internship and residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Dr. and Mrs. Palin moved to Bedford in 1951 and he practiced surgery here for 33 years.  He served as the chief of surgery at Bedford Hospital for 30 years.  He was a member, elder, trustee, and treasurer of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, Life member of the Bedford American Legion Post # 113, member of the Schellsburg VFW, Bedford Moose Lodge # 480, Bedford Elks Lodge # 1707, Masonic Lodge, Harrisburg Consistory, and the Jaffa Shrine, National Rifle Association, Bedford County Sportsman Association. He was a diplomat of The American Board of Surgery and fellow of The American College of Surgeons, former member of the Bedford Lions Club, Flickers and Bedford Investment Club. He was also a member of the Wells Memorial Presbyterian Church in Avalon, NJ.    Dr. and Mrs. Palin became very active after retirement with the Meals on Wheels Program.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bedford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Friant officiating.  Friends will be received on Saturday 1 hour prior to the service at the Church. Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
