Dr. William H. O'Shurak

Dr. William H. O’Shurak, 89, of Donahue Manor Road, Bedford, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home.  He was born on March 28, 1923, in Butler, a son of the late Frank and Olga (Hamuka) O’Shurak.  On Oct. 7, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, he married Margaret Dumbauld and she preceded him in death on June 4, 2010.  He is survived by three children: Eileen, wife of Gerard Lavelle of Harrisburg, William D. O’Shurak, married to the former Sherry A. Smith, of Morgantown, W.Va., and Judith L., wife of Robert McMillen of Palmyra; four grandchildren: Zachary J. O’Shurak and wife, Shannon; George W. Lavelle, Nicole M. Zeigler and husband, Jonathan; and Kelsey McMillen. Also surviving is a brother, Dan O’Shurak of Meadville. He was preceded in death by one brother, James O’Shurak.Dr. O’Shurak graduated from Ellwood City High School in 1940, then attended Geneva College and Texas A&M and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1950.

He served his internship at the U.S. Public Health Service in Cleveland, Ohio, and worked as a dentist in Bedford from 1953 until his retirement in February of 2012. He was a member, elder, past trustee, deacon and Sunday school superintendent at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge No. 1707, and a former member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 320 F&AM, Harrisburg Consistory and Jaffa Shrine of Bedford County. He was a member of the American Dental Association, a member and past vice president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association; member and past treasurer of the Pennsylvania Dental Society 7th District, member and past president and treasurer of the Bedford County Dental Association. He also served on the Board of PRO-PAPA Mission America, Dental Advisor - UFSS & Head Start Health Committee, and the Pilot Dental Project. He received a Fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellowship from the Federation Dentistry International, and received an Honorary Fellowship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was a private with the Army during World War II and a dental surgeon with the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Doug Friant officiating. Burial will be at Allegheny County Memorial Park near Pittsburgh. Friends will be received on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday morning at the church.
