William F. "Fred" Metzger, 76, of Bedford, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Homewood Nursing Home. He was born on July 31, 1935, in Blandburg, a son of the late Joseph C. and the late Ruth (Lovell) Metzger. On June 23, 1956 in Blandburg, he married Barbara J. Wilkinson and she survives along with two daughters, Donna S. Metzger at home and Lee Ann, wife of Mark Davis of Osterburg, two grandchildren Emily and Joey, and one brother, Lynn and wife Penny of Mechanicsburg. He was preceded in death by one son Jeffrey William Metzger, three brothers Robert, Harold and Carl Metzger, and two sisters Betty Shaw and Joann Cracknell.
He graduated from Reade Township High School in 1954 and then joined the U.S. Air force serving in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning home he worked for Equa Fax for 30 years. He also had several part time jobs as a Building Permit officer for Bedford Township, a salesman at Bedford County Memorial Park and Thomas Chevrolet. He was a life member and past President of the Bavarian Aide Society in Altoona, and the Bedford American Legion Post # 113. Fred enjoyed reading, working in his yard, and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, with Pastor Jim Neatrour officiating. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Pennsylvania Special Olympics of Bedford County, 3025 Main Road, Bedford, PA 15522.
