William E. Griffiths Jr. 92, of Bedford, PA died peacefully Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Homewood in Martinsburg. He was born on August 28, 1932, in Magnolia, NJ to the late Reverend William E. Griffiths, Sr. and Lena May (Thompson) Griffiths. In 1956 in Gardner, MA he married Nancy E. (Hedstrom) Griffiths who preceded him in death on September 19, 2012. He is survived by two daughters: Pam Heaton and husband Gary, of Cornelius, NC and Debbie Lindner and husband Gary, of Macungie, PA; two grandchildren: Billy Heaton (Samantha) and Michael Heaton; a great-grandson Finn Heaton; a sister Carol Fluharty (Ken), of Fishers, IN numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime companion Kay Goodfellow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Thelma Kammer, Dorothy Truscott, Marjorie Banning, and Phyllis Griffiths.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War and used the GI Bill to obtain his B.S in Civil Engineering and his M.S. in Structural Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of Sigma Xi Research Science Society, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and received the Chi Epsilon, Civil Engineering Honor. He retired after a long career at Hedstrom Company as Executive Vice President. He was also an active member of Bedford Presbyterian Church. He was a Former Director of Thomas Automotive Family, Laurel Trust and Laurel Bank – Johnstown Region. He served his community as a Trustee of Bedford Memorial Hospital, Southern Central Blind Association and was the Former Chairman of Bedford Municipal Authority and the Bedford Borough Historic Architectural Review Board. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and enjoyed deep sea fishing. Traveling, spending time with his family and especially great grandson Finn who always brought him joy.
A celebration of his Christian life and faith will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be private. Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
