Stephen G. Callihan, 71 of Centennial Road, Bedford, died Monday evening, April 30, 2012 at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home. He was born July 26, 1940 in Fishertown, a son of D. Glenn Callihan of Martinsburg, and the late Ruth (Way) Callihan. On April 22, 1967 in Friends Cove, he married Carol Koontz and she survives along with two children; Brenda Sue wife of James A. Heit of Bedford and Craig Stephen Callihan, married to the former Anita S. Fetter of Schellsburg, four grandchildren; Japheth and Alexis Fetter and Gryphon and Graysen Callihan. Also surviving is his stepmother Grace Callihan, four sisters; Sandra wife of R. Dean Miller of Dillsburg, Sheila wife of Gordon Bentley of Seven Lakes, NC, Sarah “Sally” Corle of New Paris and Stacy wife of Kevin Shaffer of Manns Choice, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Sharon Dibert, wife of Barry Dibert of New Paris, and a brother-in-law Curtis Corle.
Steve was a graduate of Chestnut Ridge High School, class of 1959, where he played basketball, football and was a member of the chorus, and also a graduate of Penn State with an accounting degree. He served four years with the Air Force and then went to work for Standard Register, then Kennametal, before going to Bedford Material, where he retired from in 2002. He was a PIAA umpire for boys baseball and girls softball for 25 years, and helped coach many minor and little league teams over the years. Steve was a member of the Friends Cove United Church of Christ and loved spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed doing things with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing with his friends at Down River and hunting.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Paul Claycomb and Rev. Bruce Ashlock officiating. Burial at Friends Cove UCC Cemetery. Friends will be received on Wednesday, 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Due to Steve’s interest in the Colerain Rec, the family request memorial contributions be made to the Colerain Rec, 247 Koontsville Road, Bedford, PA 15522, in lieu of flowers.
