Sheldon D. Ickes

April 15, 1921 — April 10, 2011

Sheldon D. Ickes, 89, of Barclay Street, Bedford, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Altoona Regional Hospital.  He was born on April 15, 1921, in Johnstown, a son, of the late  Samuel D. and Missouri Mae (Slick) Ickes.  On February 17, 1943 in Cumberland, he married Lidwyn I. Myers, and she preceded him in death on March 27, 2000.  He is survived by a son Gary R. Ickes married to the former Betsy Pritts of Bedford, two grandsons Sheldon D. Ickes and wife Vera of Kathleen, GA, and Samuel B. Ickes and fiancé, Leah Naylor of Mechanicsburg.  He was preceded in death by one brother Tom Ickes, and two sisters; Irene Hershberger and Ruth Hammer.

He was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, and owner of Ickes Drug Store in Bedford, which was started in 1939, by his Father Sam and Brother Tom, in the old Heckerman’s Drug Store.  In 1958 they purchased the old Bedford Theater, and after extensive remodeling, opened the present Ickes Drug Store. Sheldon was also a licensed private pilot, and was a member of the Bedford County Airport Authority.  He was a former member and past president of Bedford Borough Council for many years.  He was a member of Bedford Masonic Lodge #320 F.& A.M. Harrisburg Consistory, and the Jaffa Temple in Altoona.  He was a former member of the Bedford Lions Club, the last charter member of Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, and was a charter member of the Bedford Sportsmen Club.  He was also a member of the Flicker’s Club and was the Celestial Flicker, also a member of Bedford American Legion Post 113 and the Bedford VFW, and was on the Board of Directors for Fishertown Cemetery.  Sheldon was a graduate of Bedford High School class of 1939 and Pitt Pharmacy School in 1943.  He served in the Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate during World War II.

Funeral Services:  Thursday, April 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doug Friant officiating.  Burial at Fishertown Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.   Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Those wishing may make contributions to the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 145
