Sara K. Pittman Seager, 87 of Lincoln Highway, Bedford, died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Pennknoll Village. She was born August 12, 1922 in Friends Cove, daughter of the late Stanley A. and Lena (Shaffer) Koontz. She was first married to Palmer E. Pittman, and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1976, and second to E. Ellwood Seager, and he preceded her in death on April 4, 1997. She is survived by two children; John C. Pittman and wife Donna of Bath, and Janice P. wife of Keith Hurley of New Cumberland, WV, a step-son Edward E. Seager and wife Priscilla of Bedford, four grandchildren; Kristen wife of Matt Walsh of Slatington, Trisha wife of Kevin Santelli of Sewickley, Amanda Hurley of Honey Brook and Gretchen Hurley, fiancée of Brian Duda of Annville. Also surviving are two step grandchildren; Heather Seager of Ashville, NC and Erick Seager and wife Christine of Bedford, a great grandson Quinn Santelli and two step great grandchildren; Erick R. and Allison K. Seager, two sisters; Mary wife of Robert Moose of New Wilmington, and Ruth wife of Merle Diehl of Bedford. She was preceded in death by three brothers; Charles A. Koontz, Ray S. Koontz, and Stanley A. Koontz Jr. two sisters; Margaret Beegle and Eleanor Baker.
Sara was an active member of St. John’s UCC Church in Bedford. She had been a registered nurse for 60 years, working at Timmons Hospital and Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She also worked as a private duty nurse and did insurance physicals at her home for many years. She was a 50 year plus member of the Bedford Springs Chapter, #41, Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society and helped organize the Bedford County Nurses Association. Sara was a 1941 graduate of Bedford High School and a 1945 graduate of S. Baltimore General Hospital School of Nursing, and was an RN from 1945 to 2005.
Funeral services: Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. from St. John’s UCC Church in Bedford with Rev. Joseph Puleo officiating. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford and on Saturday morning, an hour prior to the service at the church. There will be an Eastern Star Service on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC Church, 144 W.
