Samuel Ray Hoagland, 89 of W. Sunset Lane, Bedford died Monday, August 16, 2010 at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home. He was born on October 1, 1920 in Bedford Twp, son of the late Samuel E. and Adda Mae (Shaffer) Hoagland. On December 3, 1966 in Maywood, NJ, he married Thelma Mowery and she survives along with two sisters; Helen Judy and Doris Wolfe, both of Bedford, He was preceded in death by two brothers; Sylvester and Kenneth Hoagland, and three sisters; Verna Sellers, Gladys Holler and Hazel Zembower.
Mr. Hoagland was an Army Veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater. He was of the Lutheran Faith, and retired in 1983 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission as the automotive equipment supervisor, and prior to that he worked as the garage foreman and equipment supervisor for Penn Dot. He also was an International Harvester dealer from 1937 to 1942. Mr. Hoagland was a member of Bedford Masonic Lodge #320 F. & A.M., Bedford American Legion, Post 113 and Bedford Elks Lodge # 1707. Since his retirement, he and his wife spent the winters in Avon Park, FL. He was an avid golfer and loved hunting and fishing.
A memorial services will be held on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Donna Wolfinger officiating. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park. There will be no visitation.
