Russell T. Hixon 89 of Briar Valley Road, Bedford, died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Pennknoll Village Nursing Home. He was born May 4, 1920 in Cumberland, MD, son of the late Ross and Mary (White) Hixon. On September 21, 1942 in Winchester, VA, he married Esther Maie Hoover and she preceded him in death on July 17, 2003. He is survived by two daughters; Barbara wife of Dennis Bowser of Alum Bank and Carolyn wife of Arthur Polczynski of Waldorf, MD. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Jill, John, Brian, Tonya and Kristen, nine great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Hilda Hixon of Bedford. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Lawrence.
Mr. Hixon was a member of the Pleasant Hill Reform Church in Imlertown, a member of the Fort Bedford Regional Antique Car Club, the Bedford Grange and the Bedford Lions Club. He had been a director at REA for 35 years, and retired as supervisor of Carpenters for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He served as an Army Staff Sergeant during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star; American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was involved in the invasions of Moratai, Leyte and Mindanao.
Funeral Services: Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Pleasant Hill Reform Church in Imlertown, with Rev. Randy L. Eckman and Rev. Sean McGill officiating. Burial in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the Pleasant Hill Reform Cemetery c/o David Clapper, 2209 Briar Valley Road, Bedford, PA 15522 in his memory.
