Roy W. Shaffer Jr.

March 17, 1927 — July 9, 2017

Roy W. Shaffer Jr., 90, of Bedford, died on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1927 in Bedford, a son of the late Roy W. and Margie (Scritchfield) Shaffer Sr. On August 5, 1950 in Cessna, he married Dorothy Mae (Hoagland) Shaffer and she preceded him in death on September 10, 2015. He is survived by two children:  a daughter, Mitzi Berkey and husband James, of Bedford, a son, Michael Shaffer Sr. and wife Tina, of Bedford, three grandchildren, Michael Shaffer Jr., and wife Christine, Lukas Berkey and wife Christal, Amy Soler and husband Tony; five great grandchildren:  Cory and Benjamin Berkey, Corban Shaffer, and Brodie and Ayden Soler; a sister, Norma Zembower and husband Clyde, of Bedford.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Ronnie Shaffer and his wife Delores.

Roy attended the Everett Church of God and at one time was on the board at the Village Church where he sang, taught Sunday School, and was an officer of the Royal Rangers.  Roy started working at 13, firing up the stove for the Bedford United Methodist Church.  At 16 he went to work for his dad on the family farm and drove truck for Risser Oil.  He served 4 years with the United States Airforce and was stationed in England. When Roy came home he drove truck for his dad’s supplier company and then took over the business.  Before retirement he drove for Fritz’s Logging Company and Bollman buses.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor John Kisner officiating.  Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park, with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.  Friends will be received on Tuesday, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
