Roy H. Harshberger, 87, of Horizon Heights Road, Bedford, died Saturday, October 22, 2011, at James E. Van Zandt Medical Center in Altoona. He was born on December 5, 1923, in Johnstown, a son, of the late Waldo B. and Agnes (Havener) Harshberger. On November 28, 1952 in Johnstown, he married Norma Lou “Lefty” Miller who preceded him in death on October 27, 1996. He is survived by a daughter, Laura J. wife of Dennis Warren of Boise, ID, a son, Bryce D. married to the former Kendra Zimmerman of Bedford, eight grandchildren; Jennifer, Laura, Anne, Christi, Dennis Jr., Alex, Daniel, and Josiah, a brother, Fred Harshberger of Cumberland, MD, and a sister, Jane Boucher of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Dean and Waldo Harshberger Jr., and one sister Beryl Faul.
He was a WWII Army Veteran who served in Panama. Roy and his wife moved to Bedford in 1959 and together they opened up the former Roy’s Drapery Shop. He was a charter member of the Bedford Church of the Brethren, a past exalted ruler of the Bedford Elks Lodge # 1707, and was the horse racing secretary for the Bedford Fair for many years. He was also a member of the Bedford Fire Department and Fire Police in which he helped the fire department with the annual fund drives for over 40 years. He was an avid golfer and in the 1970’s he was the announcer for the Bedford High Football Games. He was recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame for voting 50 consecutive years.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bedford Church of the Brethren where full military rights will be conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard and David Cadle friend of the family and founder of Crossroads Ministry will be officiating. Burial will be held at Richland Cemetery. Friends will be received on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Bedford Church of the Brethren and 1 hour prior to the service at the Church.
