Ronald C. Miller Sr.

March 23, 1933 — June 28, 2013

Ronald C. Miller Sr., 80, of North Thomas St., Bedford, died Friday, June 28, 2013 at the home of his daughter.  He was born March 23, 1933 in St. Clairsville, son of the late A. Clair and Eva (Stambaugh) Miller.  On September 18, 1953 in Bedford, he married Louisa Jane Bowers and she survives along with the following children; Lana, wife of Rodney Fisher of Bedford, Rev. Dr. Ronald Jr., married to the former Ann Gohl of State College, Lisa, wife of  Scott Bischof of Springhope, Leslie, married to Sam Whisel of Boiling Springs, Rev. Dr. Robert, married to the former Amber Umstead of Lafayette, LA, Louisa Jo, wife of David O’Brien III of Bedford, Dr. Leana, wife of Joby Topper of Bellefonte, and Rory of Altoona.  Also surviving are 29 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters.  He was preceded in death by two daughters; Cara Lynn and Laura Ann, and one half-sister Nancy Renner.

Ron retired after 43 years as a motel desk clerk at several motels in the local area.  He served as a small firearms instructor at the Fort Benning Army Base in Georgia. He also served as a member of the National Guard in Everett. He worked on the PA Turnpike as a member of the ambulance crew. He was supervisor of the Bedford Township Water and Sewer Authority.  He was a member of Bedford Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford Kiwanis Club, President of Bedford Borough Council, member of Fall Foliage Committee,  member of Bedford and Everett Business Associations, Downtown Bedford Inc, where he served as a founding board member.  He was a board member of the Bedford County Junior Miss. He was a member of the Bedford Visitors Bureau, Bedford Chamber of Commerce, Bedford American Legion Post and Bedford VFW and the former  4th of July Committee.  He plowed snow for many years and repaired televisions back when tubes were the main components. Ron was best known for his barbequed chicken with his blue chicken van, and raising vegetables and flower plants, which he sold from his back yard for many years.

In 2004, he was honored as the Bedford Elks ‘Citizen of the Year’ along with his wife, Jane.

Friends will be received on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, burial at the Bedford Cemetery.  Memorial services will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the local charity of your choice. Ron will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the community at large.
