Robert W. Davis

Robert W. Davis, 85, of Meadowbrook Terrace, Bedford, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009.  He was born on March 1, 1923, in Robindale, a son, of the late William R. and Ruth Anne (Woomer) Davis.  On May 29, 1947 in Indiana, he married, Maxine F. Porter who preceded him in death on November 27, 2003.  He is survived by the following family, a son, Robert Christopher Davis, of Spruce Creek, a daughter, Debbie, wife of James Tweedie, of Bedford, a daughter, Kimberly Davis Shoemaker, of Bedford, six grandchildren:  Shawna Davis, Nisha Stevens, Jessica Davis Condron, Becky Foreman, Taylor and Nathan Shoemaker, four great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Lois Heagy of Coraopolis, special caretakers:  Pat Yingling, Joyce Eichard, Linda Hopkins, Jody Altman, Shirley Mock and Kim Lesh.  He was preceded in death by one brother: William Ashley Davis.

Mr. Davis obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1943 and his Master’s Degree from The University of Pittsburgh in 1949.  He obtained additional credits from ISTC, and The University of Pittsburgh.  During World War II, he served in the Field Artillery in the European Theater, where he participated in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Bulge and the Central Europe.  He began teaching Business Education at Homer City High School in 1946, later taught at Green Twp. High School, where he served as Athletic Director and Assistant High School Principal.  In 1951, he became Principal at United High School and Superintendent of United Schools in 1953.  In January of 1956, he became Superintendent of Bedford Schools and served in this position until retirement in 1984.  At the request of the School Board, he served an additional three years as superintendent from July of 1989 until July of 1992. He was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, Bedford Rotary Club, and the Indiana Lodge #313 F. & A.M.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Inc., in Bedford with the Rev. Doug Friant officiating.  Burial at Oakland Cemetery, in Indiana, PA, immediately following the service, with full military rites conducted by the Indiana VFW Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, at the funeral home.
