Robert E. Melius Sr.

Robert E. Melius Sr., 82, of New Paris, died on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at UPMC Altoona. He was born on May 22, 1944 in Bedford, a son of the late Luther and Mildred “Mid” (Figard) Melius. On August 22, 1998 in New Paris, he married Shirley M. (Lee) Melius and she survives along with two sons: Robert E. Melius Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, and William Melius and wife Samantha Chidley of Osterburg; two daughters: Joy Lynn Bennett and partner Troy Swindell of Newville, and Christina Bailey and partner Steve Grimes of New Paris; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Robert graduated from Bedford High School and then served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He worked as a carpenter for 45 years and within that time worked as a journeyman carpenter in Lancaster. He was a member of the Bedford VFW Post #7527. In his spare time, he enjoyed and was very good at woodworking, and would run craft fairs with his wife locally and regionally, selling many of his crafts.

Friends will be received on Monday, July 6, 2026 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford. Full military rites will be conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard at 12 p.m. Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
