Robert F. Cober, 87, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Donahoe Manor, Bedford. He was born on August 30, 1923 in Somerset, a son of the late Maurice S. Cober and Effie Foor Cober. On February 18, 1958, in Cumberland, MD, he married Wilda “Judy” (Hoffman) Hoover who survives along with the two sons he adopted at that time, Rod Cober of Cincinnati, married to Susan, and Layne Cober of Bedford. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Jones and husband Donald of Bedford and his brother, Charles Jay Cober and wife Linn of Rainsburg. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Andrew, Benjamin, and Justin Cober.
Bob was a graduate of Somerset High School and a certified automotive technician, working for many years at Fox Motors. He was a member of the Bedford Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon, head usher and board president. He was a member of the Shrine of North America and Jaffa Temple of Altoona and played in the Shiner’s Oriental Band.
Bob lived in California and Florida before returning permanently to Bedford in 1965. He was a champion roller skater, winning individual freestyle and pairs events in Pennsylvania and California and competed in several national championships. He was also a good bowler, an accomplished ship model builder, and enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife. He retired from Hedstrom in 1991 and afterwards, worked for many years at Weis Market until he was nearly 84. Since then, he has been a resident of Donahoe Manor.
Funeral Services: Monday, September 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bedford Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Marilyn Lerch officiating. Burial at the Everett Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday, September 26, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Robert’s name to Bedford Church of the Brethren, Donahoe Manor Road, Bedford, PA 15522.
