Robert B. Custer

Robert B. Custer, 77, of New Paris, died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at UPMC Altoona Hospital. He was born on May 18, 1939, in Johnstown, a son of the late Phillip and Mary (Wood) Custer. On September 28, 2000, he married Linda (Hammer) Custer who preceded him in death on September 22, 2015.  He is survived by a son, James Custer, of Uniontown; step-daughter, Nancy Stewart-Franczak and husband John, of Del Ray Beach, FL; two step-sons, Robert C. Stewart and wife Debbie, of Leola, Richard A. Stewart and wife Elaine, of Schellsburg; five step-grandchildren:  Ricky, Merry, Jacob, Jason, and Sarah; one great step-grandchild, Ava;  two sisters, Audrey Babich widow of Fred, of Johnstown, Bonnie Freeman and husband Dick of Johnstown; neighbors, Dave and Cathy Leonard, of New Paris; his beloved dog, Skipper, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Ada Carol Custer, two brothers:  Bill and his wife Ann, and Jim and his wife Gerry, one niece, Kim Bloom and a nephew, Scott Custer.

Robert graduated from Johnstown High School.  He worked at Roberts Tree Farm and Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown before becoming a Pennsylvania State Trooper in 1961 and retired in 1991. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and beer drinker.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford.  Friends will be received on Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Arrangements by the Timothy A.
