Richard W. "Dick" Koontz

Richard “Dick” Koontz, 80, of Friends Cove, died on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. He was born on March 9, 1943 in Bedford, a son of the late Dennis E. and Gladys F. (Morgart) Koontz. On July 14, 2007 in Bedford he married Bonnie (Coleman) Koontz who survives along with the following family, two sons:  Jeffrey W. Koontz of Boca Raton, FL, and Brian R. Koontz and significant other Molly of Friends Cove; three step-daughters:  Debra Blackstone and husband Samuel of Hopewell; Karen Shaffer and husband Robert of St. Clair Shores, MI; and Susan Weaver and fiancé Allen Brown of Everett; two step-sons:  Shawn Weaver of Everett, and Kevin Weaver and wife Kristi also of Everett. Six grandchildren:  Ashlan, Taylor, Alec, Brian Jr., Brad, and Katie; 16 step-grandchildren:  Heather, Jerry, Lucas, Celeste, Jadyn, Samantha, Kolby, Gaige, Scott, Spencer, Liah, Kasey, Dalton, Madisyn, Hailee, and Kaelyn; three great-grandchildren and one on the way; and four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, N. Edward Koontz and wife Ann of Bedford, and Gary Koontz and wife Cyndie of Bedford.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, G.E. Clyde Koontz, and H. Eugene Koontz; and two sisters:  Janet Lohr and Betty Koontz.

Dick graduated from Bedford High School in 1961.  He retired from Kennametal after 36 years and prior to that worked for Eastern States.  He also enjoyed crop farming and raised a few beef cattle.  He participated in the 4H club and would travel to show cattle.  He enjoyed spending time in Maine hunting Bear and Moose and also the shores of Chincoteague.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Friends Cove United Church of Christ in Bedford, with Rev. Dr. William Bill Shrout officiating.  Friends will be received on Monday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford and I hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Bedford County Humane Society 182 Bohn Road, Bedford, PA 15522.
