Raymond E. Diehl

Raymond E. Diehl 93, formerly of Bedford, died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Homewood at Martinsburg.  He was born on August 15, 1923 in Bedford, a son of the late Lloyd and Mary (Beegle) Diehl.  On December 15, 1951 in Cumberland, MD he married Julia E. (Hite) Diehl, who preceded him in death on July 30, 1996.  He is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Reardon and husband John of Camp Hill; three step-grandchildren: Arleen Bruce, Esteban Reardon, Brian Reardon; eight step-great-grandchildren: Zachary, Olivia, Noah, Ella, Jacob, Brandon, Nate, and Morgan; and a brother Merle Diehl and wife Ruth, of Bedford.  He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Diehl; two brothers: Allen and Harold Diehl; and a sister, Madeline McPhearson.

Raymond was a WWII Veteran serving in the Army during the European Theatre.  He was originally trained to operate Radar with the 359th AAA, and as the war progressed served as an infantryman with the 80th Infantry Division in Germany.  Raymond worked for Paul Clark Construction before being hired by Arnold’s Floor Coverings to remodel kitchens.  He was a member of the St. John’s UCC Church, Bedford American Legion Post #113, and Fort Bedford VFW Post #7527.  Raymond was highly regarded by his family and friends in the community, and was known to help and serve others in need.  He will be remembered for his smile, laugh, and sense of humor.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor Brady Plummer officiating.  Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.  Friends will be received on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
