R. Carl Pencil

April 22, 1925 — February 10, 2013

R. Carl Pencil, 87, of Donahue Manor Road, Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on April 22, 1925, in Bedford, a son of the late C. Roscoe and Bessie L. (Holderbaum) Pencil.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clare (Clapper) Pencil in October of 1968, and his second wife, Annebelle (Locke) Pencil in October of 2011.

He is survived by a son Richard “Mike” Pencil, of Clearville; two daughters: Susan wife of Gary Waugerman of Bedford  and Carla Koontz and companion Delbert Davis of Bedford; eight grandchildren: Robert Pencil and wife Bryn, Scott Waugerman and wife Kelly, Steve Waugerman and wife Kristy, Marcy wife of Chad Herzog, Brad Koontz and wife Miranda, Jeffrey Koontz and wife Maria, Joshua, and Kasey Koontz; eight great-grandchildren: Joseph, A.J., Will, Elizabeth, and Jacob Koontz, Reece, Kaden, and Kendal Waugerman; a brother H. Jack Pencil and wife Treva, and a sister Doris Reppert, all of Bedford. He was preceded in death by a brother D. Bruce Pencil, and one great-granddaughter Mary Koontz.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Cessna, and retired in 1987 after 25 years at Kennametal.  He was a Life Member and served as a Trustee and Chairman of the Trustees of the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, a 60 year Life Member that served twice as President of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department, Associate Member of the Bedford American Legion, the Everett Lodge #524 F&A.M., a 48 year member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a Red Cross Blood Donor who donated 21 gallons. One of the loves of his life was hunting and spending time at his farm in Clearville.  He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Jeff Welsh officiating.  Burial at Bedford Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service being held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.  In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Carl’s name to the Bedford Fire Department, 244 West Penn Street, Bedford, PA 15522.
