Ned Ickes

March 24, 1931 — January 28, 2008

Ned  Ickes, 76, of  Bengal Road Bedford, died Monday, January 28, 2008 at Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital in Altoona.  He was born on March 24, 1931 in Alum Bank, son of the late Perles R. and Mattie P. (Feather) Ickes. On May 18, 1952 in Cumberland, MD, he married Dorothy R. “Dot” Logue and she preceded him in death on June 13, 1997.  He is survived by three children: Cathy D. Slick of Bedford, Scott T. Ickes of Frederick, MD, and Tammy Y. wife of Michael D. Morris of Stow, OH four grandchildren Britnee, Meghan, Michael, Rebecca, and his companion, Peggy Feathers.  He was preceded in death by four brothers:  Verle, John, Robert & Harry Ickes, three sisters:  Sue Williams, Alice Kent, & Louise Olsen.

He worked at Blackburn Russell Co for 26 years and as a security guard for Anderson Patrol.  He was a state constable, special deputy sheriff, member of the Bedford American Legion Post #113 and Bedford Moose Lodge # 480. He was a well known life- long musician that  started to play in his Father’s band (The Allegheny Ramblers on KDKA in Pittsburgh).  He also played in the Tussey Mountain Tarheels Band, Oklahoma Ranchers, Western Pals, and the  Country Strings & Keys.  He played on the Country Jubilee Show on TV 10, Altoona and broadcasted through Altoona Paid Station WCHA Chambersburg, Huntington & Roaring Spring. He was a Korean War Veteran and served as a Sergeant and tank commander in the 2nd Division, 72nd Tank Battalion. He graduated from 2nd Division Non Commissioned Officers School in Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Korean R.O.K. Service Medal.

Funeral Services on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Inc. in Bedford, with the Rev. Erik Lingenfelter officiating.  Burial in Bedford County Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.  Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, at the funeral home.
