Melvin Nee

Melvin "Mel" Nee, 87, of Evitts Creek Road, Bedford, died Thursday, April 1, 2010 at James E. Van-Zandt VA Hospital in Altoona.  He was born on October 17, 1922, in Centerville, a son, of the late John C. and Maude E. (Haines) Nee.  On October 2, 1944 in Cumberland, MD, he married Doris Jean Brant who preceded him in death on September 9, 1971.  He is survived by thee sons: John C. Nee married to the former Marsha J. Ammerman of Altoona, Roger A. Nee married to the former Kathleen Arnold of Bedford, David A. Nee married to the former Deborah Dixon of Spring Grove, VA, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one sister, Zelma Redinger of Rainsburg, one brother, Charles Nee, of GA, and a special friend, Helen Foor of Manns Choice.  He was preceded in death by two sisters:  Dorothy Young and Elva McConnell, and one brother Randy Nee.

He was a member of the Centerville Methodist Church.  He spent part of his life playing professional baseball and then went to work for the railroad.  For over 20 years he worked as a bus contractor for the Bedford School District.  He was a WWII Navy veteran and was involved in the Invasion of Normandy.  He was a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association, Bedford County Sportsman’s Club, PA Trappers Association and the Cumberland Umpire’s Association.  Mr. Nee was a Bedford County Hall of Famer.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 12:00 p.m., in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford with the Pastor Grace Whitfield officiating.  Burial at Union Cemetery in Centerville.  Friends will be received on Saturday form 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
