Mary L. O'Brien

Mary Louise O’Brien, 78, of Sweet Root Road, Bedford, died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at her residence.  She was born on November 21, 1936 in Altoona, a daughter of the late Francis P. and Helen (Barnett) Hughes.  She is survived by the following family: three daughters, Joan C. wife of Larry Finegan, of Emmitsburg, MD, Helen S. wife of Edmund Ibarra, of Buffalo Mills, and Frances B. wife of Elwood E. Claycomb, of Osterburg; two sons, Robert H. O’Brien married to the former Barbara Kegg, of Bedford, and Michael J. O’Brien, married to the former Sonya Dibert, of Everett, seven grandchildren: Stacey, Alicia and husband Jarret Lang, Eric, Jeffrey, Kristin, Keithan, and Emily; five great grandchildren: Colton, Aaron, Willow, August, and Dillon.  She was preceded in death by her former husband Robert F. O’Brien and a grandchild Neil Shriner.

Mary retired from PennDOT as an equipment operator.  She drove a pulp wood truck for the family business and a school bus for over 30 years.  As a teenager she worked as a lifeguard at Shawnee State Park.  She was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Bedford American Legion Post # 113 Ladies Auxiliary, treasurer for the Penn Dot Union AFSCME, and a member of the Helen B. Hughes Federation of Democratic Woman.  She was a 1954 graduate of Bedford High School, and attended all of her class reunions.  She loved her dogs, including Cash, and Boomer, collecting cow memorabilia, and going to the Bedford Diner. She loved her diner family, and her children are very appreciative of the good care they gave her over the years.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Father Derek Fairman officiating.  Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, in New Baltimore.  Friends will be received on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Mary’s name to Mid Atlantic German Shepherd Rescue, P.O.
