Mary C. (Coyne) Funkhouser

September 16, 1938 — September 2, 2025

Bedford

Mary C. Funkhouser, 86, of Bedford, formerly of Wheaton, MD passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 following a decline in health. She was born in Ireland, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Lavielle) Coyne. On March 21, 1976 in Mitchelville, MD, she married Adolph Funkhouser and he preceded her in death on March 2, 2008. She is survived by a dear friend, Sandra Al-Nazer of Gaithersburg, MD; and her memory lives on with extended family in Ireland and countless friends throughout Bedford and nearby communities. She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Robey.

Mary arrived to the United States from County Galway, Ireland and became an American Citizen in 1974. After retiring from the Marriott Corporation, Mary and her husband chose to settle in Bedford, where they embraced small-town life.

She was a devoted Catholic and a member at St. Thomas Catholic Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the harmonica, cracking jokes, watching football and golf, took great pleasure in listening to Daniel O’Donnell CDs, and was an avid reader. She was also a part of a bowling league for many years.

Mary will be remembered for her wit, warmth, and unwavering faith-a true embodiment of Irish grace and American Spirit. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. From an Irish Headstone” --Richard Puz.
