Margaret Martens Bronder, 93, of Bedford, died peacefully on November 11, 2015, in her 94th year. She was born on November 8, 1922, in Chicago, IL, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. D. Alan and Martha (Giesemann) Martens. On July 22, 1950 in Winchester, VA she married George J. Bronder, who preceded her in death on April 20, 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie B., wife of Charles A. Fagan III; three step-grandchildren, Lisa Fagan Wallace, of Pittsburgh, Charles A. Fagan IV, of Charlotte, NC, and James K. Fagan, of Munich, Germany, and their spouses; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, David A. Martens, and wife Jane, of Washington, MI; a nephew, Dr. Alan Martens, and two nieces, Dr. Ruth Nicolas, of Fairbanks, AK, and Nancy Cernusak, of Boise, ID.
Peggy was a graduate of the Ligonier High School, and was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Ligonier where her father was Pastor for 16 years. Later she was a member of First Church in Belfast, ME, and until her death the First Presbyterian Church, in Bedford. Peggy held a BA Degree in Pre-Med from the College of Wooster, OH and a double Master’s Degree in History and Teaching (MAT) from the University of Pittsburgh. For many years she taught high school Advanced Placement students at Peters Township High School in McMurray, PA, and for the final four years of her teaching career at the Mt. View High School in Thorndike, ME, and participated in numerous student trips to Europe and China. She was an active senior member of the Bedford Sunrise Rotary Club, and was granted a lifetime membership on her 90th birthday, in November 2012.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with The Rev. Doug Friant officiating. Burial at Ligonier Valley Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
