Magdalen M. Imler

Magdalen M. “Dena” Imler, 96, of Preston Street, Bedford, died Friday, February 7, 2014 at Pennknoll Village Nursing Home. She was born on May 17, 1917, in Bedford, a daughter of the late Harry S. and Margaret Marie (Donahoe) Heming. On October 10, 1935, in Oakland, MD, she married John C. Imler who preceded her in death on February 4, 1951.  She is survived by two sons:  John C. “Sonny” Imler Jr., married to the former Shirley Burket, and Robert L. Imler married to the former Sandra Logue all of Bedford; three grandchildren:  John C. Imler III, Shane S. Imler, and William Lee Imler; two step-grandchildren:  Bonnie and Dawn Fox; five great grandchildren;  eight step-great grandchildren; and one great great grandson;  two sisters: Hazel Warzella of Wisconsin Falls, WI,  Ruth Clark widow of William of Rainsburg; three brothers: Richard Heming widower of Jerri of Wichita Falls, TX, George Heming and wife Linda of Phoenixville,  and Harry Ed Heming and wife Norma Jean of Bedford.  She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bonnie Sherrill, a brother, Francis "Red" Heming, two sisters: Dorothy Claycomb and Anna Zdon.

Dena was a graduate of Bedford High School class of 1934, and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in the Outreach program.  She retired in 1986 after 34 years as a bookkeeper for Howard Johnson’s.  She was a member of BPW, RSVP and the Senior Center at the Fort Bedford Inn.  She participated in the young at heart games and was an auxiliary member of the Bedford Elks where she received the Citizen of the year in 2007, and the distinguished citizenship award in 1990 and 2007.  She was also a member of the Bedford County Women’s Bowling Association and was PSWBA outstanding senior bowler in 2002, and in Altoona USBCWBA Hall of Fame in 2010. She enjoyed traveling around the country for bowling tournaments and helping to coordinate local tournaments.  “There are those that do great deeds and there are others that do many small deeds often.”

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bedford with Rev. Raymond Short officiating. Burial at Bedford Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford as well as 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
