Kenneth R. Growden, 91 of US Route 220, Bedford, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. He was born September 27, 1917 in Centerville, son of the late Richard “Bud” and Mabel (Whipp) Growden. On October 5, 1938 in Cumberland, MD, he married Mary Reta Leonard and she survives along with three sons: Leonard K. Growden, married to the former Janet Barefoot, Thomas L. Growden, married to the former Althea Kegg Redinger and Robert J. Growden married to the former Kimberly Blye all of Bedford. Also surviving are five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, two sisters; Vonnie Hensel of Merritt Island, FL, Norma wife of Richard Pierre of Cocoa Beach, FL and a brother Richard Growden and wife Jean of Cumberland.
Mr. Growden was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Bedford, the Knights of Columbus and the Bedford American Legion Post 0113. He was a World War II Army Veteran who served in the European Theater. He retired from Kelly-Springfield after 37 years. He was also a self-employed farmer who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Funeral Mass: Friday, August 7, 2009 at 11:00 from St. Thomas Catholic Church in Bedford with Father Donald Dusza celebrant. Burial at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Everett Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Timothy A.
