Jean M. Travis, 96, of Country Ridge Road, Bedford, formerly of Pittsburgh and Level Green, PA, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at her residence, with her family by her side. She was born on June 17, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late William and Agnes (Brodie) Matman. On June 1, 1946, in Pittsburgh at Heinz Chapel, she married George Travis who preceded her in death on December 15, 2000. She is survived by the following family: a son, Michael Travis and wife Linda of Greensburg, and two daughters, Suzanne Travis of Bedford, and Janet wife of Freddy Tulley of Julian, WV; four grandchildren: Heather Carson and husband John, Michele Travis, and husband Vito Cammarota, Nathan Schichtel, Sean Travis, and wife Jennifer; and four great-grandchildren: Chase, Claire, Jake, and Grant. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary “Bunt” Filler, and Margaret “Marty” Drake.
Jean was a graduate of Westinghouse High School, and then attended Frick School of Women that was absorbed into the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She was member, long time Sunday School Teacher, at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. She also volunteered at the church and in the community, and was a member of the Eastern Star, AAUW, and the Westinghouse Women’s Club. The family wanted to thank the First Choice in Home Care and Home Nursing Agency (Hospice).
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Doug Friant officiating. Burial at Emory Memorial Chapel, in Dayton, PA. Friends will be received on Wednesday, from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
