James D. Smith

December 6, 1943 — June 3, 2011

James D. Smith, 67 of W. John St., Bedford, died unexpectedly Friday evening, June 3, 2011 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on December 6, 1943 in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ira C. and Genevieve (Kougher) Smith.  On June 21, 1980, in Bedford, he married Judy Greenawalt, and she survives along with four daughters; Tina K. Dull of New Paris, Tracy L. wife of Tim Foor of Selinsgrove, Laura S. Smith of Irwin and Lisa L. Smith of Annapolis, MD, six grandchildren; Matthew, Kayley, Sarah, Alexandra, Savanna and Brett.  Also one great grandbaby on the way, and the following brothers and sister; Robert C. Smith and wife Barbara, Carol Smyers, both of Bedford, Terry Smith and wife Janet and Richard Smith both of York.

Jim was a member of the Bedford Church of the Brethren, where he served on the Board.  He was the manager of Northwest Consumer Discount, and prior to that,  had been a sales representative for Thomas Automotive for 20 years.  He was a past member and treasurer for Bedford Rotary Club, a past member of the Kiwanis Club, Past President of the Bedford Recreation Council, and a board member of Bedford Parks and Recreation.  Jim loved spending time with his grandchildren and always had a smile on his face.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at the Bedford Church of the Brethren with Pastor Marilyn Lerch officiating.  Burial at Woods Church Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Tuesday morning.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bedford Church of the Brethren, Donahoe Manor Road, Bedford, PA  15522.  Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
