James E. “Ed” Matulnes, 87 of Bedford, died Sunday, December 6, 2015, at UPMC Altoona Hospital. He was born on August 17, 1928, in Altoona, a son of the late Anthony J. and Adaline (Stouffer) Matulnes. On May 16, 1950, in Altoona, he married Catherine (Waksmonski) Matulnes who survives along with two sons: Jeffrey J. Matulnes, and wife Patricia of Magnolia, TX, and Michael J. Matulnes and wife Kae Marye, of League City, TX; three grandchildren: Bryan, Brittinee, and Brent; and three great-grandchildren: Taryn, Madyson, and Gavyn. He was preceded in death by a sister Lorraine Warner.
Mr. Matulnes was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, in Bedford, and retired after 43 years as a layout technician from Penelec. He served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After Boot Camp, he was assigned to the “8th & I” Barracks. While there he was on the Silent Drill Platoon, and was appointed to the Presidential Honor Guard under President Harry S. Truman. He was a former member of the Altoona American Legion, and the Altoona Engineering Society. He can be remembered calling bingo for the Bedford Elks, and the St. Thomas Catholic Church. Ed enjoyed wood carving, and all sports.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Thomas Catholic Church, in Bedford, with Father Donald Dusza Celebrant. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park, with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m., until the hour of the service at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
