James N. Land Jr.

Graveside services were held last week for James N. Land Jr., at Woods Church Cemetery in Rainsburg, PA. He died on April 4 at Lantern Hill Continuing Care Residences in New Providence, NJ.

The youngest child of James and Frances Land, Mr. Land was born on September 23, 1929 in Staten Island, NY. He had an older brother, Robert, and two older sisters, Jane and Marjorie. He graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1948 and Lehigh University in 1952. At Lehigh, Mr. Land majored in business statistics, was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and played four years on the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, captaining the lacrosse team in his senior season.

Mr. Land served as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force before joining the First Boston Corporation in 1956. He started as an associate trainee, becoming a director and senior Vice President of the firm’s underwriting department and a member of their executive committee. He left First Boston in 1976 to start his own consulting practice, later serving as a director on the boards of Johns Manville, Raytheon Company, Marathon Oil, Kaiser Industries, and Northwest Airlines.

Mr. Land married Frances Evans in 1963 and they moved from New York City to Short Hills, NJ in 1971. He was an active in many local organizations and charities. He coached Little League baseball, was treasurer of the Millburn Football Fifth Quarter Club, and served on the boards of New Eyes for the Needy and the Stifel Paralysis Association. Mr Land also served on the Lehigh University Finance Committee for many years.

Mr. Land is survived by his son, James, daughter-in-law, Patricia, granddaughter, Olivia, and five nieces and three nephews.  Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford. Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
