Helen Camp Palmer

Helen Camp Palmer, of Oppenheimer Road, Bedford, died Friday, June 3, 2005 at Homewood Nursing Home, in Martinsburg.  She was born on September 26, 1919 in Cherry Tree, A daughter of the late James J. and  Minnie (Bottenhorn) Camp. She married George Palmer on May 13, 1946 in London, England, while both were serving as war correspondents for the Associated Press.  He preceded her in death on March 17, 1986.

She was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School, class of 1935, and honors graduate of the journalism program at Penn State.  For much of World War II she served as a war correspondent for the Associated Press.  In 1945 she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, one of the highest accolades in journalism, for a series of stories she wrote about troops returning to the U.S. from the war zone.  She lived for many years in Port Washington, New York, while her husband served as an assistant to the managing editor for the New York Times.  The Palmers retired to Bedford in 1981 to live on the farm purchased by her father in 1942

She is survived by three daughters, Nina Palmer and her husband William Sweeney of New York, NY, Zona Palmer of Kingston, NY, and Leila Palmer and her husband Douglas Rankin of Irvine, Ca. Two grandchildren Megan Sweeney and her husband David Stade, of Los Angeles, Ca., and Colin Dentan, of Tempe, Az. Her sister, Barbara Camp Antonson of Roaring Spring.   She was preceded in death by 1 brother Lt. Frank B. Camp, who was missing in action, in World War II.
