Glentis I. “Genny” Street, 86 of Bedford Valley Road, Bedford, died Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Western Maryland Health System. He was born August 10, 1924 in Cumberland, Valley, son of the late Claude A. and Helen (Oster) Streett. On September 21, 1945 in Cumberland Valley, he married Flora L. Rose and she preceded him in death on May 30, 1999. He is survived by two children; Glenda Sue wife of Philip Ely III, of Bedford and J. Todd Streett of Mercersburg, six grandchildren; Karen wife of Glenn “Buddy” Anderson, Philip W. Ely and wife Kathy, Hannah, Abbigayle, Janette, and Emilie Streett, one great grandson, Aspen one sister Norma wife of Glenn Deremer of Cumberland Valley, and a special friend Jean Detrick. He was preceded in death by a brother Arnold and a sister Oleta Mickey.
Mr. Streett worked as a maintenance foreman at PPG in Cumberland for many years. He was an avid hunter, who killed a buck every year for 59 years. He was involved in establishing the Cumberland Valley recreation fields, and was instrumental in establishing the World War II monument in Centerville and also the Centerville Post Office historical marker. In his early years he was a very skilled baseball player, that played semi-pro baseball. He had offers from several major league baseball teams, including the Pirates. He established a little league team in Centerville called the Centerville Astros. He was a former cub scout leader and was active in the Bedford Valley Historical Society.
Funeral services: Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, with the Rev. Wayne Morris officiating. Burial at the Union Cemetery in Centerville. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home. Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
