Glenn Matthew “Rip” Fisher, 90, of Bedford, passed away peacefully in his sleep following a short illness, on Sunday, January 10, 2016. He was the fourth of six children to Pete and Fannie (Steele) Fisher, and was born on August 11, 1925 in Bedford. On August 12, 1951, in the Wolfsburg Methodist Church, he married Vivian Foor, who preceded him in death on January 13, 2011.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Edwin, Clyde, and Fred Fisher, and one sister, Sara Davis.
Glenn is survived by a son, Rodney Fisher married to the former Lana Miller, and a daughter, Pamela wife of Harry Corley Jr. all of Bedford, six grandchildren, who were his passion: Alisha Fisher, and husband Jack Graybill of York, Justin Cober-Lake, and wife Nicole of Arrington, VA, Amy Fisher, and friend John Franko of Pittsburgh, Crystal Corley, and husband Brian Heuston of East Freedom, SSG Joe Corley, and wife Christie of East Freedom, and Heather Corley, and husband William Corley of East Freedom, and 14 great-grandchildren whom he adored, one brother Ray Fisher and wife Shirley of Bedford. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters-in-law, and brother-in-law, and their spouses. His family was his pride and joy, and he would have done anything for them.
He attended Bedford High School, and with the onset of WWII he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became a communications and navigation officer. He served in the South Pacific on board LCI, Landing Craft Infantry 739 and then in San Francisco LCI 663. He always enjoyed talking about and telling stories from his time in the service. After his honorable discharge from the navy, he spent a few years in Canton, Ohio, then returned to Bedford and met his wife at the Chalybeate Roll Arena. Glenn painted for Don Hershberger for a number of years and then retired from PennDot in 1987. He was a faithful Pittsburgh Pirate and Steeler fan and would attend any game he could. He was an avid golfer, with a 2 handicap at one time. He enjoyed hunting until he discovered feeding and watching deer was more enjoyable. He was a life member of Bedford Elks Post 1707, and a member of the Bedford American Legion Post 113. Most important, he was a member of the Wolfsburg United Methodist Church, where for many years he attended faithfully and worked for the church. He accepted the Lord into his heart and was waiting to be called home.
