Glenden G. Casteel, 81 of Manns Choice, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 22, 2023 at his home. He was born on March 5, 1942, in Norristown, a son of the late Glenn W. and Ona B. (Holler) Casteel. On September 22, 2018 in Bedford, he married Carol (Hinson) Rhoades-Casteel who survives along with the following family: one step-son Bob Rhoades of Friends Cove; two step-daughters, Cindy Bodin widow of Mike, of Great Cacapon, WV, and Jenifer Thomas and husband Brian of Frederick, MD; two brothers Terry Casteel and wife Connie of Irwin, and Lynn Casteel and wife Diana of Buffalo, NY; an aunt Evelyn Hetrick of Williamsburg, one niece Chrstine; three nephews: Terry, Dylan, and Colin; and a beloved dog Leaper. He was preceded in death by his first wife Delores Casteel.
Glenden was a member of the Bedford Methodist Church and taught math for the public schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Texas. He graduated from Everett High School in 1959 and Shippensburg University with a degree in education. Glenden then finished his education at St. John’s of Annapolis Campus in Santa Fe, NM with a Master’s degree. He served in the Army during Vietnam. He was a member of the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in Albuquerque, NM, the Bedford American Legion Post #113, Rotary Club and received the Citizen of the Year Award in 2008, was a life member of the Bedford County Historical Society, and was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed sailing, wood working, singing, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, four wheelers, and reading books. He was a wonderful husband and had a gift for making friends where ever he went. He mentored many students as a teacher and some of them still kept in touch with him.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., at the Bedford Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Marsh officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church. Graveside services to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Madley Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
