Gertrude McGuire 104 of Arandale St., Bedford, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Pennknoll Village Nursing Home. She was born October 26, 1902 in Martinsburg, daughter of the late Ira G. and Lucinda (Reynolds) Stoner. She was preceded in death by her first husband Harry Shaffer and also by her second husband Dr. Edward McGuire. She is survived by two step-daughters: Dixie Lochrie and Patricia wife of Pete Laughlin both of Johnstown, a step-granddaughter Jackie Lochrie and numerous nieces, nephew and cousins including Helen Romick her caregiver. She was preceded in death by two brothers: David and Harry Stoner.
Mrs. McGuire was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and received her education from Juniata College and the University of PA. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the senior choir from 1929-1992 and taught Jr. Choir from 1944 -1992. She was also a member, past treasure and past Worth Matron of Bedford Springs Chapter #41 Order of the Eastern Star since 1930. She was a member of BPW and the BPW Chorus, a member of local, state and national education associations. She did volunteer work at the snack bar at Bedford Hospital for many years and was also a member and past president of Bedford Women’s Club and a member and past president of Bedford County Chorus.
She started teach school in Martinsburg and retired from Bedford Primary after 35 years as a 4th grade teacher.
Funeral services: Thursday 11:00 AM in the chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Thomas A. Ekstrand officiating. Burial at Bedford Cemetery. Friends will be received on Wednesday fro 4-7 PM at the funeral home. Those wishing may make contributions to Bedford Trinity Lutheran Church, 106 W. Penn St., Bedford, in her memory.
