George William Henderson, 88, of Lincoln Highway, Bedford, died Thursday, September 15, 2005 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 24, 1917 in Bedford, a son of the late John Raymond and Carrie Ethel (Smith) Henderson. On August 13, 1940 in Osterbug, he married Dodie Leoda Smith, and she preceded him in death on September 26, 1979. On June 28, 1980 he married Gladys Beegle Kegg who survives along with a daughter, Shirley Jean wife of Van Gleason of Raeford, NC, a son, William J. married to the former Mary McGinnis of Bedford, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Betty wife of James P. Koontz and Lois widow of Melton Dermer both of Bedford. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Jack Henderson and James husband of Imogene Henderson of Bedford.
He was a member of the Bedford Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford VFW Post # 7527, DAV, and a WWII Army Veteran with the 29th Infantry. He received the EAME Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, and a WWII Victory Medal. He was the co-owner for 27 years of the former Henderson's Market in Bedford, He also worked at Lowry’s IGA for seven years until his retirement.
Funeral Services on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at 11:00 AM from the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with the Pastor Raymond E. Short officiating. Burial in Bedford County Memorial Park with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Monday from 7-9 PM, at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
