Garnet R. Shatzer

Garnet R. Shatzer 86 of Back Springs Road, Bedford, died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born April 7, 1922 in Chambersburg, son of the late Russel J. and Emma C. (Lehman) Shatzer.  On May 28, 1948 he married Edna G. Forrester and she preceded him in death on September 18, 1972.  On October 17, 1975 he married Ruth (Hoffman) Dibert and she survives along with four sons: Barry G. Shatzer, married to the former Catherine F. Dodson of Clearville, Wayne R. Shatzer married to the former Diane F. Wilson of Martinsburg, Warren J. Shatzer married to the former Catharine Jay of Clearville and Dennis F. Shatzer married to the former Stephanie W. Bland of Houston, TX, three step-children: Robert Dibert married to the former Cindy Burkett of Bedford, Beverly wife of Joe Hershberger of Everett and Nancy wife of Matt Borkowski of Somerset, nine grandchildren: Rachel J. wife of Lance Savedge, Matthew P. Shatzer, Jennifer wife of John Farringer, Carrie G., Adam W., Sara A., Joshua C., and Derek J. Shatzer. Seven step-grandchildren: Ryan Dibert and wife Angie, Aaron Hershberger and wife Jen, Allison wife of Ian Frederick, Andrea Hershberger, Shannon Borkowski and wife Angela, Andy & Jessica Borkowski, six great grandchildren: Madison, Kaitlyn and Molly Savedge, Mason and Juliana Shatzer and Alex Farringer, five step-great grandchildren: Isaiah, Jensen and Brian Hershberger, Julia and Zander Borkowski.  Also surviving are three brothers: John Shatzer and wife Daris, Frank Shatzer and wife Evelyn, Blaine Shatzer and wife Mary Joyce, and four sisters: Della Lockbaun, Nelda Burkholder, Beda Stauffer and June Fahnestock.  He was preceded in death by two sisters: Edna Condon and Treva Lawyer.

Mr. Shatzer was a member of St. John’s UCC Church in Bedford and the St. Thomas American Legion.  He retired from United Telephone Company after 34 years.

Funeral Services: Thursday, 11:00 AM from St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bedford with Rev. Joseph R. Puleo and Rev. Paul Claycomb officiating.  Burial in the St. Thomas Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Timothy A.
