Ewing Dale Garlick passed away on January 10, 2010 from pneumonia at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital, just forty days shy of his ninety-second birthday. Born at home on the family farm in Everett to Harry Earl Garlick and Edna Blanche Smith Garlick on February 18, 1919, Dale was raised in Roaring Spring and graduated from Roaring Spring High School in 1938. Like many young men of his era, he joined the Marine Corps in 1938 just before the outbreak of World War II. The Corps and its teachings would become the defining factor in Dale’s way of life for the next seventy years.
He rose through the ranks in a culture that demanded excellence and loyalty of its members, ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. Due to his handsome looks and physique in his early years in the Corps, Dale served as a recruiter and posed for a recruiting poster painted by famous American artist and illustrator James Montgomery Flagg. The Marine Corps purchased the original oil painting from Flagg and it now hangs in the Naval Annex in Arlington, VA. He spent World War II in the South Pacific with the 4th Marine Division and was part of a war bond tour with President Roosevelt in South America. Following the war, he was assigned to eleven different duty stations within the United States.
After a twenty-year career in the Marine Corps, Dale retired in 1959. He began a second career as a Logistics Engineer with Lockheed’s Missiles and Space Division and retired for a second time in 1974, vowing to wear a coat and tie again only to funerals and weddings. He and his wife Irma then retired to Bedford.
He was a life-long hunter, fisherman and golfer and enjoyed the tranquility and solitude of the outdoors. In his retirement he served his community through the Bedford Tree Commission, Kiwanis, Fall Foliage, Bedford Presbyterian Church, and whatever other current project Irma was engaged in. In previous Presbyterian churches, he served as a deacon, elder and treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 ½ years, Irma, of Bedford; a daughter, Karen Peddicord, of Walla Walla, WA; a son, Brian Garlick of Woodland, CA; his son-in-law Tom Peddicord, former daughter-in-law Denise Myrick; five grandsons: Adam Peddicord, Kyle Garlick, Darin Peddicord, Kelly Garlick, and Kevin Garlick, and two granddaughters, Courtney Peddicord and Blythe Peddicord. In addition, he leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Adrian, and Jasmine Peddicord; brothers Leo Garlick and Dr. Elton Garlick, sister Maxine Huntsman, as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ivadene Ford Barley.
Ever the true Marine, Dale faced death with courage, calmness and firmness. Semper Fi.
