Emma Jane “EJ” Garthoff, 65, of East Pitt Street, went home to be with the Lord on October 14, 2011 after a long battle of several illnesses. She was born February 15, 1946, in Clearfield, Pa, adopted as an infant by the late Ellis N. and Lucinda J. Detrich. On July 16, 1966, she married Ronald E. Garthoff who survives along with several brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles in Clearfield, Pa, and two brothers Irvin R. Detrich of Florida, and E. Dean Detrich of Michigan. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Charlotte Elizabeth, and her biological mother Elizabeth (Luzier) Ogden.
Emma attended the Altoona Area High School graduating with the class of 1964, and participated in marching and concert band playing the flute, piccolo, and concert piano. She then attended Penn State University and Mount Aloysius Junior College where she obtained an Associate’s Degree in music education. Emma and Ron worked together as foster parents while residing in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and she also had her own dog grooming shop and kennels raising Cocker Spaniels. She was a homemaker and enjoyed all types of crafts.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with the Pastor Wayne Magruder officiating.
