Elmer L. Landis

Elmer L. Landis, 89, of South Thomas Street, Bedford, died Tuesday February 16, 2010 at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home.  He was born on August 17, 1920, in Boswell, a son, of the late Elmer F. and Elsie (McKenzie) Landis.  On December 4, 1946 in Philadelphia, he married Binnie Biddle and she preceded him in death on April 25, 2006.  He is survived by a daughter, Kristine L. wife of William Wertz of Bedford, two sons, Keith A. Landis, married to the former Mary Beth Travis of Bedford, and Kim E. Landis, of Cape Coral, Fl, four grandchildren:  Melinda Foor and husband Robert, Greg Wertz, Kyle and Sean Landis, two great grandchildren:  Austin and Andrew Foor.  He was preceded in death by two brothers:  William and Carl Landis.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bedford.  He graduated from Boswell High School in 1938, and then went on to Texas A&M for military training involving radio communications. He was a WWII veteran serving with the Marine Corps. After 27 years, he retired as a Corporal with the Pennsylvania State Police, and then went on to work for Kennametal as a personnel manager and retired there after 14 years.  He also drove and delivered cars for Thomas Chevrolet.  He was the past president of the Fraternal Order of the Pennsylvania State Police, a member of the Bedford American Legion, Moose and VFW.  He enjoyed square dancing, watching basketball, going to wrestling meets and football games at the high school.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 19, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Jeff Welsch officiating. Burial at Bedford Cemetery.  Full military honors conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.   Friends will be received on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
