Lt. Col. Elizabeth J. “Betty” Miller, Ret., 94, formerly of Bedford, died Friday, February 20, 2015, at Homewood in Martinsburg. She was born on April 6, 1920, in Johnstown, a daughter of the late C. Roy and Harriet (Hann) Miller. Betty was a wonderful and loving aunt and is survived by her following nieces and nephews: Dan and Kathy Miller of Ohio, Laura and Dennis Warren of Idaho, Dennis and Chris Miller of Ohio, Bryce and Kendra Harshberger of Pennsylvania, Barbara Miller of B.C. Canada, and Marian and Roger Brown of Texas. She has 17 great, and 11 great, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother: Donald Miller, and a sister Norma Lou “Lefty” Harshberger.
Betty was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church and volunteered in a number of local organizations. She retired as Lt. Col. in 1973, from the U.S. Air Force. She completed her nurses training in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from St. John's University and King's County Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Her military career began in May 1943, as 1st Lt. and she received the WW11 Victory Medal followed by: 2nd Lt. (1943), Captain (1955), Major (1962), and Lt. Col. (1968). Her foreign service included: United Kingdom, Morocco, Alaska, Japan and England along with many stateside locations. She was very proud of her military service and was grateful for the opportunity to have served her country.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Gerald W. McCuller Jr., Chaplain at Homewood, officiating. Burial will be at the Richland Cemetery. Full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard at the funeral home.
